AI Will Transform Everything. That’s Exactly Why We Need to Talk About Risk

𝗔𝗜: 𝗪𝗲, 𝗔 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗣𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗵 𝗗𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗸 𝗢𝗻 𝗜𝘁𝘀 𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 :--> 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗜 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁 from the other tech innovations we have seen is not just the capability it contains; it is the scale of what is coming that is the defining aspect.

While we go gung-ho ahead on the AI bandwagon, what truly has me worried is that we are not factoring in the risks either at individual levels or at scale. Happily, early trends of an awakening is present in customers judging from my interactions with them - but this is yet to feature in organisations' focus. My deepest sincere desire in this domain is that we, all of us, place risk at the forefront while designing and implementing AI solutions...

AI is going to become increasingly embedded across regulatory, financial, personal and business domains. Once these systems become deeply interconnected, the internet at its most vibrant and interconnected may seem almost like a chart drawn on a map by a three-year-old.The more the interconnections, the greater the risk. Add to that the fact that AI systems can increasingly act on our behalf, and the risk becomes more complex. Net-net, we are not ready yet – internal systems and people still don’t think along the lines of risk, risk containment and mitigation, and how to prepare for an AI era.

𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗜𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗘𝗻𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗔𝗜 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗰𝗸 -

And this is what worries me : that the risk considerations are still not sufficiently high on the AI priority stack. In my view, the approach should be something closer to: understand the risk, then evaluate the technology, then look at the options, the market, the MVP, the product and finally implementation. Are we actually doing that? We are not, for the large part. And that, to me, is terrifying. We need a mindset change.

𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗚𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀, 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴

I see it as a fairly straightforward requirement for strong guardrails, in-depth risk mitigation and, above all, serious testing. And make no mistake, these challenges will arise. That, to me, is almost a foregone conclusion.

𝗜𝗳 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝘀 𝗮 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺, 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗕𝗲 𝗟𝗼𝗼𝗽𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀

Designing a perfect, foolproof computer system — or any system, for that matter — has remained beyond human capability through thousands of years of human progress. If there is a system, there will be loopholes. That is simply human reality. What makes us think we can scale that peak now? We cant – mistakes will be made, always have, always will.We need to have management and mitigating strategies in place for the future that is coming – but we as a people are punch drunk on the promise of AI, and are simply not paying enough attention to the attendant risk.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝗜 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 - 𝗖𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗕𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗧𝗼 𝗪𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻 -

From what I am seeing, customers are beginning to examine AI very closely. They are asking about data privacy, permissions, what happens when something goes wrong, why something happened, and what exactly the system is capable of doing. And yet, we are still going ahead with AI. Combine the two thoughts together – and the reality becomes clear – customers are becoming aware, but AI companies while still sold on the potential, are beginning to get the response in terms of hard questions, forcing them to change. And we as an industry need to use this as a stimulus to urgently refocus towards serious risk management capabilities.

𝗦𝗰𝗿𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗻𝘆 𝗜𝘀 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗔𝗱𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻

The increased scrutiny by customers is not necessarily killing adoption. It is creating a testing phase. Customers increasingly understand that AI is the way forward. They just want to understand the risks before they hand over more autonomy to it. And I think that is actually a very positive sign – it means customers are not rejecting AI; they are asking for greater confidence before embracing it.So, as someone who isn't a core technologist, my advice to AI companies is rather simple: test the hell out of your solutions.

Test every scenario you can think of. Test every scenario your team can think of. Get five prospects to try and break it. Think of the things nobody thought of. Test again. Then test some more.Because if there is one thing we know about systems, it is this: there will always be something we didn't anticipate. And perhaps the biggest question for AI will not just be what it can do. It will be what it can do that we never intended it to do. Food for thought.

Tarkeshwar Mahadev : Pune Hidden Gems

What do you do when you have something good, something that is praiseworthy, and something that can be an attraction? Answer, if you are in Pune – keep silent about it, tell no one. This is seemingly exaggerated – perhaps it is exaggerated; but I am flabbergasted by a series of unbelievable locations that I have visited in Pune City – within main Pune City, mind you . These are not well known – at least not one single localite informed me, even on asking . At least those I talked. If I didn’t talk to the right people, perhaps I am in the wrong. But – if you expand your vision to TV, Cinema, Popular opinion, hotels – the situation above gets proof. I earlier visited Pune on a family holiday, stayed in a good Hotel. Not one Hotel informed me of these; not one person – Taxi, Tour Guide – even mentioned these . Thus, it seems to me that Puneites don’t realise how lovely a city they have, how mesmerizing are its many, many tourist-worthy places, how rich and unspoiled,...

Book Review - Stay Hungry Stay Foolish by Rashmi Bansal

This is the first Rashmi Bansal book I am reading, and I have to admit that her writing makes for an interesting read. Stay Hungry Stay Foolish is a very interesting and diverse collection of stories of Entrepreneurs – I wont say Case Studies, as the focus is on the individual rather than the company, the Brand or the strategy employed. And this is just about the only negative I can spot in an otherwise near-flawless book on Business in India. A worthy addition to any regular reader on Business, rated 4 stars. THE BOOK The book’s collection of Entrepreneurs is subdivided into 3 interesting heads : The Believers, The Opportunists, The Alternate Visionists. The first – the Believers – consists of examples of Entrepreneurs who went into Business straight after their MBA: the Opportunists went into Business when opportunity presented itself; and the third group – those with creative intent or social causes at heart. This classification makes it interesting, to say the least...

Book Review : Chhatrapati Shivaji

Chhattrapati Shivaji stands as one of the most celebrated medieval heroes in Modern India; it is a name that touches a chord in almost every Indian, and is a powerful force to reckon with even today, three centuries after his death. He is present everywhere you can see; he is one of the few to withstand the onslaught of naming everything in sight after the Nehru family. A Chhatrapati square her, a Shivaji Terminus there – many cities have honoured themselves with some landmark, statue, street or square in his name. Such is his current followership, and so powerful is his presence. This makes reviewing any book related on this personality a big responsibility, a tough task  – and not one to be taken with insincerity, or with bias,  or attitude. I had always thought of The Chhatrapati as a tall personality, a commanding and great Indian; but had never given a thought to the pull, the deep connect and the powerful influence this genius had on me; as I read the current boo...
